Self-employment: Insurance Coverage

To cover yourself... Insurance companies have finally acknowledged the self-employed.

Often, we think medical and dental insurance since those tend to be the most popular coverages used as an employee. However, there are other products that are just as important, if not more so.

Home office insurance

Added to your regular home insurance, it covers computer equipment, software, and loss of revenue in case of fire and public liability.

Note: Contrary to regular home insurance, this one offers coverage when you are out visiting clients should you be the cause of an accident or a fire, for example. In addition, it offers higher coverage on equipment and software.

Public liability

Covers damages due to accident, injury or fire caused by an error or omission on your part.

Disability

It is often referred to as the most important since it enables you to continue to pay others if you become disabled. However, it is very costly.

Note: There are other types of coverage called "other occupation" that gives you an income should you be completely unable to work. Another, called "main occupation" applies if you are unable to do the work that you did before your disability.

Medical and dental care

Often offered in conjunction with life insurance or disability plans.

Serious conditions

This is a good alternative between disability insurance and no insurance at all. It's cheaper and allocates a lump sum in case of a serious condition like a heart attack, cancer, blindness, organ transplantation, multiple sclerosis, etc.
